Felix Shines at Australian Cross Country Championships

August 23rd marked a proud moment for Calwell, as Felix represented the ACT for the second consecutive year at the prestigious Australian Cross Country Championships, held in the scenic city of Ballarat.

Unlike school sports, where placing in the top six at state level is sufficient, qualifying for the Australian Championships is a rigorous process. Athletes must be affiliated with an athletics club, place in the top three at their state championships, meet qualifying times, and submit their best performances from the past 12 months for review. A selection panel then determines if those performances meet current national standards.

Felix was one of 43 ACT athletes who met these high standards and earned team selection. Among them, he was one of only two U13 boys chosen to compete. The course was exceptionally demanding, featuring mud pits, tree logs, and even an equestrian ring—all designed to test the athletes’ endurance and agility.

Despite the challenges, Felix delivered a stellar performance, placing 48th nationally and matching his personal best time over 3km. His teammate achieved an impressive 2nd place, with just over a minute separating the top and 48th positions.

Felix’s commitment didn’t end there. After Saturday’s race, he endured an 8+ hour drive back to Canberra and was back on the track Monday morning at Tuggeranong region athletics, competing in the 800m at 9:30 AM.

Felix’s determination and resilience are a testament to the spirit of our school community. Congratulations, Felix!
